UN Calls for Land Restoration on World Environment Day

Every year on June 5th, the world celebrates World Environment Day, which aims to increase awareness and action for environmental protection. This year, the theme is 'land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience'.

The UN Convention to Combat Desertification reports that up to 40% of the planet's land is degraded, directly affecting half of the world's population. The number and duration of droughts have increased by 29% since 2000 - without urgent action, droughts may affect over three-quarters of the world's population by 2050.

As part of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), land restoration plays a crucial role. This initiative calls for the protection and rejuvenation of ecosystems worldwide and is vital for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
