Ethiopia Dismisses Egypt’s Claims Amid Escalating Dam Dispute

Ethiopia has responded to a letter from the Egyptian Foreign Minister, dismissing what it refers to as a "series of baseless accusations".

Ethiopian Foreign Minister Taye Atske-Selassie addressed the Council on September 6, 2024, in response to Egypt's letter which rejected Ethiopia's fifth and latest round of filling the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). Ethiopia's response came after Egypt accused Ethiopia of violating international law by continuing the dam's filling without the consent of downstream countries in a letter to the UN Security Council.

This comes as Egypt forges closer military ties with Ethiopia's neighbour Somalia, which has its disagreement with Ethiopia. The 12-year dispute between Ethiopia and downstream nations Egypt and Sudan over the dam's construction remains unresolved, with last month's latest round of negotiations failing to produce an agreement.
