Somaliland Opposition Leader Wins Presidential Election

Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, popularly known as Irro, has won the presidential election in the self-declared Republic of Somaliland. He became the country's sixth leader since its 1991 break from Somalia.

Abdullahi secured 64% of the vote, beating Kulmiye Party President Muse Bihi Abdi of the Somaliland National Electoral Commission (NEC). The election was originally scheduled to take place in 2022 but was delayed due to political differences.

During campaigning, Irro pledged to create a brighter future for Somaliland, including more employment opportunities for women. The president-elect, who will be sworn in on 14 December, is seen as a more unifying figure.
