African Leaders Urged To Seek Alternative Funding Sources
African leaders have been urged to look internally for funding opportunities that will help fuel the continent's development drive. Speaking at the 38th African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said leaders must "reduce their appetite for borrowing".
Her statement aligns with growing calls for leaders in the region to recognize the continent's immense potential and take steps that "reshape global order", using Africa's "abundant natural resources and dyanamic youthful population". Analysts have also called for the forging of new partnerships, including with China, in order to address pressing needs.
This year's meeting had as its theme, Justice For Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations.
The gathering elected the new chairperson of the African Union Commission from candidates hailing from Kenya, Djibouti, and Madagascar. Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga's campaign for leadership was unsuccessful.
