M23 Rebels Seek Peace Talks After Capturing Dr Congo's Bukavu

The M23 rebel group has called for direct peace talks with the Congolese government after seizing Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu Province.

In a statement, M23 said its forces entered the city to "restore security" and "assist the population", accusing government troops of abandoning their positions after committing atrocities. The rebels said the need for dialogue to address the root causes of the conflict and urged opposition forces to join what they described as a "Constitutional struggle" for change.

The DR Congo government has rejected negotiations, maintaining that talks with the rebels remain a red line. The situation remains volatile, with fears of further escalation as government forces, supported by Burundian troops and local militias, continue to resist M23's advances.
