Sudan's Army Claims Control of Khartoum

The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) has announced the recapture of the main airport and surrounding areas as they continue to press on with their advance against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The army, which had been on the backfoot since the war began in April 2023, has recaptured large parts of territories, including the presidential palace in Khartoum.

Witnesses reported seeing RSF fighters retreating "southwards" from neighbourhoods they previously controlled in the Sundanese capital. Earlier, the head of SAF, Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, visited the presidential palace for the first time since the war began in 2023, after making a surprise arrival at the airport following its recapture.

The escalating fighting has made worse an already dire humanitarian crisis, with aid agencies, including the UN and the African Union, describing the situation in the country as the world's largest humanitarian crisis.
