New Book Tells of Liberian People's 'Heroic Fight' Against Ebola

"We didn't know what it was. We had never experienced an infectious disease of such intensity," former president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has said during a ceremony marking the launch of a new book on Liberia's battle with Ebola.

The book, titled Stepping Up tothe Plate: Liberia's Untold Ebola Story, is an initiative of the Liberia Institute for Growing Patriotism and the Angie Brooks International Centre for Women's Empowerment.

The former president said the government implemented a "militant approach" to contain the outbreak - which required citizens to remain in place and seek treatment.

The book chronicles the human spirit and nationwide coordination that defined Liberia's response to the deadly 2014-2016 Ebola outbreak, offering a first-hand account of sacrifice, leadership, and collective resolve.
