'Military Coups Threatening Democratic Gains In West Africa'
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has warned that the growing number of unconstitutional changes in West Africa is endangering the region's democratic progress and overall stability. In a statement delivered on his behalf by a senior Nigerian official at the launch of ECOWAS Golden Jubilee ceremony in Ghana, President Tinubu said democracy and good governance are "fundamental principles that bind us".
Westt African heads of state are meeting in Accra to deliberate on the decision by three of its members to leave the bloc in January. An ECOWAS statement said the leaders will discuss the "modalities of the countries' withdrawal and its implications for ECOWAS agencies".
The bloc has maintained existing ECOWAS protocols - including its free trade policy and visa-free policies with the three Sahel nations. During the meeting, the statement said, Ecowas would "set up a structure to facilitate discussions on these modalities".
