Why Traore's Legacy In Burkina Faso May Extend Beyond Popularity

At 36, Captain Ibrahim Traore is the world's youngest leader who seized power in a military coup in 2022. However, the foundation of his leadership is already shaky, having survived several coups himself, writes Enoch Randy Aikins, a researcher at the Institute for Security Studies.

Traore pledged to combat terrorism and has undertaken radical reforms, including reversing his predecessor's salary increment for government officials and the nationalization of two gold mines. His popularity, Aikins said, continues to soar in the country, indicating his policies resonates with Burkinabes.

"With a young, strong, charismatic leader, Burkina Faso has a chance to get its governance right and achieve its developmental aspirations," Alkins wrote, noting that the country must not fall into the "usual traps of inefficiencies, corruption and mismanagement".
