The unexpected passing of Raila Odinga on October 15 has focused a positive spotlight on the pivotal role he played in Kenya's ongoing democratic growth and political development. ''A long time pro-democracy advocate, Raila led the successful struggle to end years of one party rule in Kenya and to elevate the country's democratic foundations, writes veteran diplomat Johnnie Carson and former U.S. ambassador to Kenya, in a guest column co-authored with Etienne Mashuli.
