Nigeria Grants Asylum to Guinea-Bissau Presidential Candidate

The Nigerian government has granted special protection to Guinea-Bissau presidential candidate Fernando Dias da Costa following reports of imminent threats to his life after the military seized power hours before the announcement of the 23 November 2025 election results.

Dias, the main opposition candidate to incumbent President Umaro Embaló, was placed under protection within the Nigerian Embassy in Guinea-Bissau with approval from President Bola Tinubu. Nigeria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs requested that the ECOWAS Stabilisation Support Mission provide additional security for Dias, citing a commitment to safeguarding democratic processes and regional stability.

The coup has drawn widespread criticism, with some West African leaders, including former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan and Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, describing it as staged or a sham, allegedly aimed at preventing the announcement of the election outcome.
