Rising Land Disputes In Liberia Prompts Calls For Reform

Officials from the Liberia Land Authority (LLA) have warned that unresolved land disputes across the country could spiral into widespread conflict.

Testifying before lawmakers regarding the recent surge in land-related tensions, LLA Vice Chairperson Joe K. Williams said the current disputes are "only a fraction" of what may occur if the government fails to properly demarcate county boundaries and strengthen land governance systems.

Williams said as the country's population rapidly increases, larger counties will likely see boundary disputes escalate. In response to the testimony, lawmakers voted to summon additional institutions to present their recommendations on addressing the rising crisis.
