'I Don't Want to Hear of Corruption,' Museveni Warns Ugandan MPs

President Yoweri Museveni has issued a stern warning to Ugandan lawmakers against engaging in corruption, vowing to take decisive action against both those who give and receive bribes. Speaking during a ceremony for the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), the President emphasized that corruption within oversight institutions undermines governance and "threatens the stability" of the country.

Referencing the recent arrest of three Members of Parliament on bribery allegations, Museveni questioned the integrity of the nation's watchdogs. "If the oversight bodies themselves are corrupt, who will oversee them?" he asked.

The warning follows a series of high-profile arrests in 2024, where several lawmakers were detained for allegedly soliciting a 20% kickback from the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) in exchange for influencing an increase in the commission's budget.
