The African Union Panel on Darfur, led by former South African president, Thabo Mbeki, was appointed with its core mandate to explore ways in which peace, justice and reconciliation for Darfur can be achieved in a complementary manner which does not jeopardise any of these values. It also included former presidents Abdulsalami Abubaker of Nigeria and Pierre Buyoya of Burundi.
