AllAfrica has launched an eight-part podcast series, Wild Basil, featuring remarkable women who contributed to peace and development through their innovative work on biodiversity and conservation, and addresses the competition for scarce resources in Southern Africa, including Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Angola, Botswana, and South Africa. Above all, their work contributes to conflict prevention and resolution in their communities and their countries. [AllAfrica's elevation of the voices of African peacebuilders is supported by funding from the philanthropic Carnegie Corporation of New York.]
Episode 6 introduces Koketso Mookodi, known as Koki. Aware of the limited number of Batswana working on environmental protection, Koki sees her central mission to inspire educators who would then inspire the next generations of indigenous people to become scientists and engineers, because they have a special knowledge of their environments. Her work led her to become committed to ensuring that the stories of Botswana are told by the indigenous people rather than outsiders. Koki created an innovative teacher training programme aimed at linking the different regions and the multi-generations to build awareness of the urgent need for environmental conservation.
Produced by MUVA and directed by Luize Guimeraes Scherer Navarra and Michael Quenen, with support from Stephanie Urdang and others.
