Ethiopia: Dibaba Wins Gold, Sets New Record in Beijing

15 August 2008

The Ethiopian athlete, Tirunesh Dibaba, has won Africa's first gold medal at the Beijing Olympics.

She won gold in the women's 10,000 meters race, the first of her career.

The 23-year-old joined compatriots such as Kenenisa Bekele and Haile Gebreselassie by setting a new Olympic record time of 29:54.66s.

Dibaba ran her way to victory by outpacing Elvan Abeylegesse, also a native of Ethiopia but now representing Turkey, and Kenyan-born Dutchwoman Lorna Kiplagat.
