West Africa Waters 'Most Dangerous' From Piracy & Kidnapping

Coastal waters off west Africa have become the most perilous area in the world for seafarers, according to the latest report from Oceans Beyond Piracy, a Colorado-based non-profit dedicated to maritime security. "The Gulf of Guinea is the most dangerous region for seafarers with a rise in violence across the year and an increase in kidnap-for-ransom in the fourth quarter of 2015," the report states. Increasingly violent kidnapping has become the principal source of revenue for the pirates, replacing oil-tanker hijacking as a result of the steep decline in petroleum prices.
