The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has expressed alarm at the spreading violence and increasing death toll in Egypt. Navi Pillay was reacting to escalating violence in response to a state of emergency instituted by Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi in three Suez Canal provinces after a weekend wave of protests left more than 50 people dead.
