Graft Commission Testimony to Split South African Ruling Party?

Members of the African National Congress (ANC) have begun to testify before the Zondo Commission of Inquiry. However, this testimony could further divide the party, as Zoom meeting audio leaks between former president Jacob Zuma and the top six ANC members have revealed, writes Ferial Haffajee for Daily Maverick. One of the sound clips reveals that ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa decried that Former president Jacob Zuma thought he (Ramaphosa) was devious, and assured Zuma that he still considered him his elder and a leader. Another, meanwhile, exposes deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte saying that Zuma should not appear before Judge Raymond Zondo at the Commission of Inquiry into State Capture.

Zuma - who missed a court deadline to file a responding affidavit to a contempt of court application brought by the Zondo Commission - has in the past not only called on Judge Zondo to recuse himself from the Commission, but also questioned the constitutionality of the legal body which was established to probe allegations of state capture among companies, individuals, and high-ranking government officials. Zuma was first implicated in state capture in former public protector Thuli Madonsela's report that highlighted widespread corruption in government and other sectors.
