Nairobi Water Shortage Likely to Linger For a Decade

The Kenyan government is still in the dark on how soon it can guarantee Nairobians enough water for domestic use. It requires that ongoing new-source water projects be completed, enough funding be found even when it has admitted it is broke, a cohesive plan be adopted to fight water cartels, and wastage be minimised.

A January 2018 investigation in Nairobi, showed that the biggest threat to effective supply of the little available water to Nairobians remain the cartels that interfered with flow pipes to fill their tankers and sell it to city dwellers.

As the supply crisis worsens, city dwellers have been subjected to harsh water rationing under the equitable distribution programme that does not work, with many residents going for months without a drop from their taps, writes Mwangi Muiruri for The Nation.
