U.S. Spotlight on Africa as Leaders Convene in DC for Summit

Africa is in the spotlight in Washington, DC this week as leaders from across the continent gather for the second U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit. Along with the schedule for official events from Tuesday (December 13, 2022) to Thursday, dozens of side events are taking place in many venues across the city throughout the week.

The gathering, which is making headlines even in new outlets that pay Africa scant attention, will disrupt major traffic all week, especially near the Washington Convention Center where top-level sessions are taking place with both President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris scheduled to take part. Biden will host African heads-of-state and government at a White House dinner on Wednesday evening.

Pre-summit events on Monday (December 12) included a Peace, Trade, and Youth seminar at George Washington University, a  Civil Society Forum, African Human Rights Leaders Summit, the Semafor Africa Summit, a panel examining Just Energy Transitions at  Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. and 'Technology Driven Africa - Advancing the Digitalization Agenda,' hosted by the Corporate Council on Africa.

“Less speeches, more action” was the theme of the remarks by African Union Youth Envoy Chido Cleo Mpemba on expectations of the African Youth for the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit.
