Kenyans Urged to Return to Work After Cancellation of Protests

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called on Kenyans to resume their normal working routine following the cancellation of the opposition Azimio La Umoja One 'anti-government' protests. While lauding Kenyans for their resilience in the face of challenges, Gachagua expressed confidence in the country's economic recovery.

Despite the cancellation of the protests, Gachagua warned that some criminal elements may still lurk. He stated that security agencies in the country are on high alert to counter any cases of insecurity that may arise.

Odinga has suspended weekly countrywide demonstrations, after accepting President William Ruto's proposal for a bi-partisan parliamentary process on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners' recruitment.

Odinga maintains that the anti-government protests have never condoned violence and destruction of people's property.

Three people have died since the protests erupted on March 20, 2023 and businesses have been looted, property vandalized, and journalists attacked in unrest that has alarmed Kenya's neighbours and allies.

Odinga had called for protests every Monday and Thursday, accusing Ruto of stealing last year's election and of failing to control the surging cost of living.

The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Workneh Gebeyehu, has lauded Ruto and Odinga for giving dialogue a chance to resolve challenges facing the country.
