Kenya, Ethiopia Shine in Historic Wins at Berlin Marathon 2023

Kenyan world record holder Eliud Kipchoge clinched a historic fifth Berlin Marathon title on September 24, 2023.

He now becomes the most successful male runner in Berlin after Ethiopian marathon legend Haille Gebresellasie, who has four world championship titles.

Meanwhile, in the women's race Ethiopian Tigst Assefa shattered Brigid Kosgei's Women's World Record set four years ago, becoming the first woman to ever run under 2:12 as she clocked 2:11:53 to win the marathon.

Kenya's Sheila Chepkirui put up a good fight to finish second, clocking 2:17:49, almost half a minute off her personal best.

Despite his men's victory, Kipchoge sounded a bit disappointed that he could not achieve one of his targets, lowering his own world record time.
