U.S. Sudan Envoy Visiting 7 Capitals Pursuing Halt to Conflict

Special Envoy for Sudan Tom Perriello is visiting seven countries across east Africa and the Middle East in an attempt to jumo-start peace talks aimed at halting fighting in Sudan, addressing the "immediate and dire humanitarian needs of the Sudanese people" and promoting a path towards a civilian-led, democratic government, the State Department said in announcing the two-week trip on Friday.

On March 8, the United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution calling for a Ramadan cease-fire in Sudan, where the U.N. secretary-general warned this week that the humanitarian crisis has reached "colossal proportions."

"I'm heading to the region to spend time meeting with the Sudanese people, our African partners and others who can help end this war in Sudan," Perriello said in a post on the official U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan page on X. His itinerary includes stops in Kampala, Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Cairo,  Djibouti, Riyadh, and Abu Dhabi.

Perriello, whose appointment was announced by Secretary of State Antony Blinken at the end of February, previously served as Special Envoy to the Great Lakes Region of Africa and served one term in the U.S. House of Representatives. He is responsbile for coordinating U.S.policy on Sudan and advance efforts to end the hostilities, as well as "secure unhindered humanitarian access", the State Department said.

The State Department had earlier said the U.S. is concerned about the prohibition of cross-border humanitarian assistance by the Sudanese army and reports that it is also "obstructing assistance from reaching communities in areas of Sudan controlled by the Rapid Support Forces".
