Why Is Egypt Involved in Ethiopia vs Somalia Stand-Off?

There has been escalating tension between Ethiopia and Somalia ever since Ethiopia signed a Memorandum of Understanding earlier this year with the breakaway Republic of Somaliland - which Somalia claims - for access to its ports. This was done in exchange for political recognition from the landlocked regional power.

Somalia opposed the move, describing it as interfering in its domestic affairs. As a result, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud sought to strengthen Somalia's diplomatric and military positions when he signed his defense pact with neighboring Egypt. The new alliance has led Egypt to deliver consignments of military equipment - including arms and ammunition - to Somalia.

Analysts say Egypt's involvement is less about supporting Somalia and more about countering Ethiopia's influence in the region. "While the risk of direct military confrontation remains low, a proxy conflict between Egypt-backed Somalia and Ethiopia is increasingly likely and carries significant geopolitical implications," said one expert with knowledge of the region.
