Obi Quits Nigerian Opposition Party, Cites 'Toxic' Climate
Former presidential candidate Peter Obi, who ran on the Labour Party ticket, has exited the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a party he joined in December 2025. Obi said a worsening political climate marked by external interference and internal friction, while clarifying that the move is not a result of personal fallout with party leaders.
Obi described the national political space as "increasingly toxic", saying there was a culture of intimidation and insecurity, and that the very systems meant to safeguard citizens are now being used to undermine them.
The Nigerian politician was later reported to have taken up membership with the National Democratic Coalition (NDC).
