Africa Wins Two More Medals

Africa won another two medals at the Olympics on Wednesday, bringing the tally so far to three.

Nigerian weightlifter Ruth Ogbeifo won Silver in the women's weightlifting 75kg category. Deaf South African swimmer Terence Parkin also won a silver medal in the men's 200m breaststroke final, with a time of 2min 12.5 sec.

South African 1996 gold medallist Penny Heyns had earlier won a bronze medal in the women's 100m breastroke.

Ogfeiba was beaten in her final by Maria Isabel Urrutia of Colombia, but puished Yi-Hang Kuo of Taiwan into third place.

Parkin's time was 1.63 seconds slower than the gold medallist in his race, Domenico Fioravanti of Italy. He came in 1.86 seconds ahead of Davide Rummolo of Italy, the bronze winner.

In swimming, a number of Africans -- including Maria Awori of Kenya, Zena Sahely of Senegal, Supra Singhal of Uganda, Simon Thirsk of South Africa, Helene Muller, Sarah Poewe and Penelope Heyns of South Africa, Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe, and Rania Elwani and Haitham Hassan-Ma of Egypt qualified to move to the next stage of their competitions.
