South Africa: 'Mandela-Inspired' Artwork Defaced

The Tokolos Stencil Collective has claimed responsibility for defacing an art installation in Cape Town, saying the "Ray-Ban Madiba speaks to a society that does not see. A tokolos has given the atrocious piece of art some lasik. May we all remove our myopia. Aluta continua!" The artwork was installed by artist Michael Elion, with with the City of Cape Town as part of World Design Capital 2014, and is said to be a tribute to former president Nelson Mandela.

The Tokolos Stencil Collective is an anonymous group of stencil and graffiti artists, activists and other concerned citizens in South Africa. They have claimed responsibility for defacing several landmarks in Cape Town, including this installation in Sea Point - saying they have intervened in "white supremacist corporatist art".

Standing in the middle: Michael Elion's Mandela-Ray Ban installation, called "Perceived Freedom", has been met with criticism since it was installed in a South African beachfront suburb.
