South African Woman Kicked Out of Home 'Like a Dog'

Carmina Vieira and her family have been evicted from the Cape Town home where they have lived for more than a quarter of a century. The gentrification and resulting surge in property prices has been blamed by social activists for evictions in the city. But the landlord of the property where Vieira has been living says she has not been paying rent and and owes him more than R50 000 after two years of extending her eviction notices.

The Vieira family’s belongings are removed from their home at Roodebloem Mansions in Woodstock.

Carmina Vieira is comforted by her son, Damien, outside their home during the eviction.
