Gold Panners Accused of Adding to Zimbabwe's Water Woes

Illegal gold panning in areas surrounding Bulawayo's supply dams has contributed to perennial water challenges, the city's authorities have said. The local authority had decreed a 14-hour water shedding schedule but residents are now receiving the scarce necessity only once a week, leading to locals, especially those in the high-density suburbs of the city, relying on unsafe water sources. Recurring droughts and failure to import water chemicals have resulted in most parts of Zimbabwe without tap water.
