Ethiopia Looks at New Trade Partnerships

The Ethiopian Investment Commission (EIC) in collaboration with the Ethiopian embassy in the U.S. held an Ethio-US investment and business forum in Washington, D.C. last week.

The Ethiopian government urged U.S. businesses to invest in its economy. Among other interested countries are Italy - whose Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni paid a visit to Ethiopia on April 14 and 15, 2023. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed also held talks with Slovenia's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon on ways of strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Demeke Mekonen held talks with Hungarian Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister, Péter Szijjártó in Addis Ababa. The two countries have six decades of diplomatic relations and bilateral cooperation, Ethiopian News Agency reports.

Ethiopia is looking to rebuild its economy, after a war with Tigray region that began in November 2020. A brokered peace deal was signed in November 2022. Ethiopia established an interim government in Tigray region in March 2023.

Amhara region and Oromia region in Ethiopia has seen the flare-up of conflict in recent months, which includes Amhara objecting to Ethiopia's plan to incorporate regional forces into the national armed forces.
