The ruling coalition's candidate, former Prime Minister Amadou Ba, has conceded defeat and congratulated his opposition rival Bassirou Diomaye Faye for winning the presidential election.

The first set of results from Sunday's vote had shown Faye in the lead, which triggered widespread street celebrations among opposition supporters in the capital Dakar.

Millions lined up to vote in the country's fifth presidential election following three years of unprecedented political turbulence that sparked violent anti-government protests in recent weeks, buoying support for the opposition.

The 44-year-old former tax inspector was recently released from prison following a general amnesty granted to political prisoners by incumbent president Macky Sall, who was not on the ballot.
