Ethiopia's Tigray Faces Malaria Surge in War's Aftermath
A surge in malaria cases has been reported by the Tigray Regional Health Bureau, with 17,000 new infections recorded weekly over the past two weeks, and 13 deaths related to malaria since October.
Alegay Gebremedhin, head of the Disease Prevention and Control Team, said the disease is spreading across 66 districts in the region due to limited medical access and inadequate mosquito control.
In July, the bureau reported a 60% increase in malaria cases, with 20 districts significantly affected. Of these, 10 districts reached epidemic levels. Over 7.3 million cases of malaria have been reported in Ethiopia between January and October of this year, according to WHO.
