Ecowas Tries to Mediate in Liberia Legislative Crisis - Again

A delegation from the Economic Community Of West African States (Ecowas) has arrived in Liberia to help resolve a longstanding dispute among lawmakers of the National Legislature over attempts to remove Speaker Fonati Koffa. The regional body made little headway during its first mediation mission to the country.

The latest delegation is expected to hold talks with various stakeholders, including President Joseph Boakai and members of the legislature. The group will also meet former presidents Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and George Weah.

There are reports, however, that a faction of the legislature referring to themselves as the 'majority bloc' has decided not to meet with the delegation, whose mission comes ahead of a crucial hearing by the Supreme Court of Liberia into the matter.

Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing into the cause of a fire that destroyed a section of the legislative building in December 2024.
