Dozens of Nigerian States Report Surge In Lassa Fever

Nigerian health authorities have reported thousands of suspected cases of the deadly lassa fever across 33 states between January and March 2025. More than a hundred people are reported to have died from the disease.

The Nigerian Center for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) says it has activated the Lassa Fever National Emergency Operations Centre at "response level 2" to facilitate coordination among various stakeholders, including federal and state governments.

The NCDC cited weak community-level surveillance and "inadequate human and financial resources", as challenges straining treatment efforts, as well as difficulty with contact tracing and "active case searches".

Lassa fever, which is spread by rodents, is a viral infection that is endemic across West Africa.
