Water Security Takes Center Stage at 39th African Union Assembly

African leaders are gathering in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, for the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union (AU), which is set to formally open later this week.

Against a backdrop of sobering statistics - showing that 400 million people on the continent lack water for their daily livelihoods and over 800 million lack basic hygiene services - leaders will launch this year's theme on Saturday: "Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063."

The theme is central to Agenda 2063, the African Union's 50-year development framework aimed at economic transformation, inclusive growth, poverty eradication, improved food security, and climate resilience.

"In light of the climate disruptions witnessed, the sparing use of water in all aspects of daily life is a major imperative," said African Union Commission Chairperson H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf. "This resource must be a catalyst for bringing our states closer together and for fostering peace."
