Pope Leo XIV Begins Africa Tour in Algeria With Calls of Peace

Pope Leo XIV called for peace at the opening stop on his African tour. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the president of Algeria, welcomed the pope. He was later taken to the Maqam Echahid, a monument dedicated to those who died fighting for Algerian independence during the Franco-Algerian war of 1954-62.

The pope also visited the ruins of Hippo, where Augustine, one of Christianity's greatest theologians, was bishop from around 395 A.D. In addition, he met with Augustinian friars and nuns and visited the basilica that overlooks the ruins in the modern city of Annaba.

Pope Leo XIV expressed his deep admiration for the Algerian people, saying that they had never been defeated by hardship due to their strong roots in solidarity and community. His 11-day journey will include stops in Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea.
