Africa Takes Action After Ebola Outbreak

As the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo claims over 134 lives and spreads to Uganda, African nations are mobilising to keep the virus from crossing their borders.

South Africa has pledged $2.5 million through the Africa CDC's Africa Epidemics Fund, with the continental health body praising the contribution as a demonstration of African solidarity and self-reliance in health security.

Rwanda has dispatched response teams to border crossings, established isolation centres to monitor returning residents, and stepped up tracing capabilities.

At the same time, Kenya has screened over 34,500 travellers at airports, seaports, and land borders, and ruled out blanket quarantines. Meanwhile, Nigeria's Federal Airports Authority is working alongside the country's disease control agency to isolate and assess any suspected cases.
