Zanzibar 4 November 2010 – Experts from the African Union (AU), Regional Economic Communities (RECs), United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and African Development Bank (AfDB), have converged on 4 November 2010, in Zanzibar, United Republic of Tanzania, to discuss ways of improving their working relationship.
The opening ceremony was chaired by Dr. Rene Kouassi Nguettia, Director of Economic Affairs of the African Union Commission, in the presence of Mr. Joseph Birungi, Head of Delegation from the East African Community (EAC), the host institution. After the official opening ceremony, the meeting was divided into two working groups. One group will discuss peace and security issues while the other group will discuss economic and social issues.
For three days, the Committee of Secretariat Officials will brainstorm on the implementation of the Minimum Integration Programme (MIP): the Action Plan and a Concept Note on the institution of an Integration Summit. They will also consider issues on Human Resources, Science and Technology such as the vital Role of RECs in Supporting the Implementation of AU Continental programmes in science, technology and Biosafety as well as education and youth development.
With regards to rural economy and agriculture, the participants will exchange on the cooperation between the African Union Commission (AUC) and the East African Community in the updating of the Transboundary Ecosystems Management Bill; and the coordination and harmonization of the AUC/NEPAD Agency and RECs efforts in the implementation of the Comprehensive Africa Agricultural Development Programme (CAADP) and environment related programmes.
On infrastructure and energy, the Experts will brainstorm on the Africa’s Institutional Architecture for Infrastructure amongst others. Peace and Security is also top on the agenda amongst issues to be discussed by the AU-RECs-ECA-AfDB Committee of Secretariat Officials.
