Botswana to Hold National and Local Elections in October
Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi has set October 23 as the date for parliamentary and local elections. Masisi will run for the presidential race for the first time, he came to power in April 2018 succeeding Ian Khama, who had served the maximum 10 years.

As the race to presidential elections draws closer the ruling Botswana Democratic Party has been hit with the allegedly newly formed faction dubbed New Jerusalem which has the backing of former President Ian Khama. This comes weeks after Masisi told parliament that relations between himself and Khama were so bad that he had asked former president Festus Mogae and other ruling party elders to mediate between them, to no avail.

Botswana Democratic Party has elected Mokgweetsi Masisi as its president at a special congress in Kang in the Kgalagadi District. Masisi took over the country's leadership after being handpicked by former president Ian Khama when he left office in 2018. Masisi will stand for the presidential elections in October 2019.

Outgoing President Ian Khama has revealed his plans to continue serving Botswana post-retirement in various areas including patronising arts, football, as well as serving as champion of Vision 2036. Khama is expected to bid farewell to communities in all 57 constituencies before ending his 10-year reign on April 1.
