Zimbabwe's Mnangagwa Sued for Silence Over Trapped Miners' Fate
President Emmerson Mnangagwa and two of his ministers have been dragged to court for failing to share information regarding the status of miners trapped at a mine in Matshetshe in Esigodini, Matabeleland South. The court action has been initiated by the parents of one of the affected gold miners. On November 10, 2020 dozens of illegal miners were trapped in a shaft at the mine. Efforts to rescue them were abandoned after the area was declared unsafe. Although mining accidents are relatively common in decommissioned mines, particularly when the ground is loosened by rain, Zimbabwe's mining industry has come under scrutiny for human rights violations and environmental concerns.
