Justices Of Liberia's Top Court Skip Boakai's Annual Address

Justices of the Supreme Court of Liberia were conspicuously absent from the constitutionally mandated annual address of President Joseph Boakai on Monday, January 27. The seats reserved for all five justices remained vacant throughout his speech, fueling speculation that they might have stayed away for fear of legitimizing the executive branch's recognition of Richard Nagbe Koon of the ruling Unity Party as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Analysts say the court's action demonstrates that Koon's recognition as Speaker goes against its ruling into the saga and violates the Constitution.

A long-standing legislative dispute over plans to remove embattled Speaker Fonati Koffa has hindered some government functions. Police recently said that a fire incident in December at the Capitol Building, which houses the National Legislature, was arson.
