Opposition Struggles as Zanu-PF Rallies for Constitutional Change

The Zanu-PF actively mobilized support at public hearings for the Constitutional Amendment Bill, which proposed extending President Emmerson Mnangagwa's term limit to 2030.

The ruling party brought supporters from towns such as Beatrice to hearings in Dema and Chitungwiza. Some submitted written affidavits backing the bill. The public hearings are the latest to catch the opposition in tatters, failing to rally its supporters.

Meanwhile, opposition leaders have accused the Parliamentary Committee overseeing the public hearings of deliberately sidelining them from the proceedings. Former cabinet minister David Coltart said there were deliberate efforts to exclude his voice from the hearings.

The bill has met resistance from the opposition as it suspends the 2028 general elections until 2030. ItÂ places the mandate of selecting the president on Parliament.
