U.S. Lawmaker Pushes For Recognition of Somaliland

U.S. Congressman John Rose has urged Washington to pursue stronger engagement with Somaliland, citing the self-declared republic's relative stability and governance record in the Horn of Africa.

His remarks follow the introduction of the Somaliland Economic Access and Opportunity Act on March 19. The legislation would require the U.S. Treasury to report to Congress on the barriers Somaliland faces in accessing international financial systems.

"We think it's in the best interest of the United States to develop a stronger relationship and to provide a path forward for what I would ultimately hope might be a full recognition of Somaliland as an independent nation," Congressman Rose said.

In December, Israel became the first country to recognize Somaliland as an independent nation.
