Boakai Submits Bill for Liberia War Crimes, Anti-Graft Courts

Supporters of President Joseph Boakai have described the legislation as one of the most consequential accountability reforms in post-conflict Liberia. The proposed War and Economic Crimes Court would address transgressions committed during Liberia's years of political instability and armed conflict between 1979 and 2003.

The bill also seeks to create a specialized national anti-corruption court focused exclusively on corruption-related offenses. In a communication to lawmakers, President Boakai said that existing judicial structures have proven inadequate to combat corruption and protect public resources.

Observers have said the president's actions test the administration's will to convert years of rhetoric on justice reform into enforceable law.
