Burkina on the Brink As Army Dissolves Govt

The army chief in Burkina issued a communique late Thursday dissolving the government of President Blaise Comaore following massive popular demonstrations protesting a planned vote to extend the president's term of office. Former U.S. Assistant Secretary Johnnie Carson says the outcome could influence whether democracy continues a positive trajectory across sub-Saharan Africa or whether it stalls or begins to unravel and collapse. He cites the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Rwanda, Gabon, Congo-Brazzaville and Benin, where leaders want to extend their tenure.
