Crossroads in the Sahel As Mali and Chad Undergo Transitions

"Political and military issues have multiplied while terrorism is strengthening its base and extending its front," writes veteran diplomat and former United Nations official Ahmedou Ould Abdallah, President of the Centre for Strategies and Security for the Sahel Sahara in Nouakchott.

The Sahel region of Africa is a 3,860-kilometre arc-like land mass lying to the immediate south of the Sahara Desert and stretching east-west across the breadth of the African continent.
