Egypt Affirms Support For Somalia In Standoff With Ethiopia

President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi has said his country empathizes with Somalia because it has been in a state of instability for about three decades. Speaking to dignitaries at a ceremony marking the graduation of a new batch of police officers, the Egyptian president said Egypt's support was not intended to antagonize Ethiopia.

There has been increased tension in the region since a cargo ship carrying significant amount of military aid from the Egyptian Armed Forces landed in Somalia.  Analysts say the support is one of the largest arms shipments that Somalia has received from its allies.

Somalia opposes an agreement between Ethiopia and the breakaway Republic of Somaliland for access to its ports.
