Liberia Scrambles to Fill Funding Gap After USAID Cancellations
The Liberian government is struggling to address the gaps in funding that have been created after the cancelations of several projects financed by USAID, the American agency that administers development assistance around the world. The new U.S. administration announced a 90-day suspension of the program to allow for a review of the agency's work.
Liberia's Finance Minister Augustine Ngafua has said that several USAID-led initiatives, including in the health, education, and governance sectors, have been canceled as a result. The minister said this is a "significant setback, considering the vital role these projects played in supporting Liberia's economic and social development".
Among the notable funding cuts is the cancelation of a U.S.$17 million domestic resource mobilization initiative, which was intended to modernize the country's tax system and increase revenue.
