Uganda's Museveni Declared Winner - Bobi Wine Decries Crackdown

Ugandan Presidential candidate Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert (Bobi Wine) issued a statement Saturday "from a safe place" rejecting the results announced by the Election Commission on Saturday declaring President Museveni the winner of the January 15th election. African observers have denounced "reports of intimidation, arrest and abductions" targeting the opposition that they say undermined the polls' credibility.

A number of people have been reported dead after clashes between security forces and voters.

Voting hours had to be extended after technical glitches at several poll stations. The Electoral Commission chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama, said the extension was intended to compensate for time lost earlier in the day and ensure that no voter is disenfranchised.

Bobi Wine also denouced the crackdown on his supporters and the government-ordered internet shutdown ordered two days before voting. He said he managed to escape when military and police raided his home on Friday "although my wife and other family members remain under house arrest." Earlier reports said he had been arrested at his home.

Voting was delayed in several parts of Kiteezi, with officials citing logistical challenges related to the delivery of election equipment. Residents at affected polling stations were left waiting as critical materials, including voter verification kits and other essential tools, had not arrived on time.
